Dramatic negative openings: rebuild the sentence
Never have I heard such nonsense.
Not only did they arrive late, but they also left early.Rebuild the missing part of each sentence using the words in brackets. After the negative opening, the auxiliary must come before the subject - add an auxiliary yourself where the verb does not have one.

5. did they discoverEvery answer puts an auxiliary in front of the subject. In item 1 the perfect auxiliary moves forward. In items 2 and 5 the verb has no auxiliary of its own, so a form of the dummy auxiliary is added and the main verb stays in its base form. In item 3 the verb itself moves in front of the subject because it never needs a helper. In item 4 the modal and the subject simply change places.
